Recently, Rise of the TMNT writer Ron Corcillo posted on X: "I will answer one thing here. A lot of you are asking about romantic relationships. We generally tried to avoid romance, especially with the teenage characters, because of issues with sexualization of the TMNT characters in the past. So I can't confirm any romantic relationships."
(I can't help but notice this was tweeted the same day as my video on the top of TMNT relationships, but I digress...)
This sent a large portion of the Rise fandom into a frenzy, who were upset that their favorite turtles couldn't be incestuous, homosexual, or otherwise inappropriate underage relationships.
Tweet A:
It's fine to have a show that isn't romance, though I'm kinda confused because shows and people shipped teens without it being sexaul,so why is ponit a worry other than not wanting the teen characters to be sexualised by adults.
Tweet B:
Ron, I completely understand and are ok with it. But I’m wondering. Will future them have romantic relationships or are they going to stay single for the rest of their lives?
Tweet C:
And I can not thank you enough for this! Romantic pairings always means shipping wars, and NOT having to deal with this level of toxicity and the fighting that comes with it in the Rise fandom was one of the greatest decisions Rise ever made.
The reason why I pointed this one out is the fact that their problem with shipping seems entirely based on the "toxicity" of shipping wars, rather than the more pressing issue, which is the sexualization of young characters. If THAT'S the reason why you're against canonical TMNT ships, then you're just fucking lost.
Tweet D:
It kinda sucks that there aren't really any romantic relationships all cause of sexualization of teenagers but hey I understand why you try to avoid romance especially since tbh some romantic relationships like 2012 Donnie and April do not work especially when its unhealthy
Lol no. It doesn't "suck" that there aren't romantic relationships.
Tweet E:
Wait I thought April and Casey were being set up?
They desperately want a lesbian couple in TMNT.
Tweet F:
And as an ace aro super fan I thank you for your service
Aaaaaand you found a way to make this about your weird deviant sexuality instead of the fact that sexualization of young characters is wrong. And what even is the implication here? Do depictions of relationships trigger "ace aro" people? Again, the Rise fans who like Ron's post are liking it for all the wrong reasons.
