Tatoruzu NECA finally released their 7" so-called "Mirage" April O'Neil. If you've been on Tatoruzu.com for a while, you already knew this was coming. According to NECA: Based on Eastman & Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic books from Mirage Studios! NECA is celebrating the iconic April O’Neil with an all-new sculpt. This 7-inch scale action figure includes interchangeable hands, a Professor Obligado mini figure, and more! Comes in collector friendly packaging with original artwork by Kevin Eastman. Available now in Target stores. Obviously, April was never black despite NECA's "Mirage" April being so.
Stu_Paddasso Not this crap again. The weird thing is that she looks more like Elisa Maza from Gargoyles. Seriously, jacket, shirt, jeans, everything. At least this one doesn’t look like Lizzo, I guess.
Leonardo1984 While it’s cool that we get Professor Obligado, this is a major bust by NECA. They have been cranking out some really good and accurate figures, only to drop this nonsense. All they had to do was follow the old model and add a perm. The drawings on the box aren’t even original April art, just a modern take by Kevin Eastman from looking at it.
gojirawater I’m probably gonna buy it anyway, even though the choice still sucks. Race or ethnicity swaps tilt me so much, but whatever. I also hate that this is gonna spread more misinformation, people saying she was original black is just annoying, at best.
SpiderBytez Hot take: black washing is just as bad as white washing, even if it's in large media like TMNT 💔
MrSlash so there making a toy of that black April which was clearly a mistake someone did at mirage long ago
Gort i think this is the first instance ive seen of retroactive race-washing being accepted in an official capacity. i for the life of me cannot think of another example.
Tatoruzu Gort Yeah, there are a lot of characters with different iterations that are a different race (usually changed from white to black), but I don't think history has ever been rewritten to the point where the original character was changed to be a different race — not even a new iteration or anything. It's that much more sinister and evil when you put it that way.
